When it comes to elbow pain and wrist pain it doesn’t matter if you are a weekend tennis player, an administrator, a little league baseball player, or a gamer. Elbow and wrist injuries occur among all ages. Both elbow and wrist pain also often interfere greatly with everyday activities, work, play and everything in between, causing a serious impact on your quality of life.
Just as there are many different people from different walks of life who experience these symptoms, there are also many different root causes. Common diagnoses we treat related to elbow pain and wrist pain include lateral epicondylitis (“Tennis Elbow”), medial epicondylitis (“Golfer’s Elbow), bicipital tendonitis, “Little League Elbow”, UCL sprain/tear, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis and fracture.
After obtaining a thorough history and physical examination, your SportsCare Physical Therapist will be able to determine an appropriate treatment plan. A typical plan of care will consist of manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular reeducation and modalities to achieve pain reduction.
Manual therapy is a hands-on treatment including soft tissue mobilization and stretching and joint mobilization performed to decrease pain and regain normal elbow/wrist mechanics. Therapeutic exercise is performed to stretch and strengthen involved muscles and tendons.
Neuromuscular reeducation retrains the upper extremity to perform tasks, such as throwing or overhead activities, with proper control and stability. Modalities can help alleviate tension, promote blood flow and reduce swelling, and may include moist heat, cryotherapy, paraffin wax, ultrasound and electric stimulation.
At SportsCare when it comes to elbow pain and wrist pain your plan of care will be customized to your specific injury and may include a mix of all of the modalities or treatments described above. At the time of your discharge, your physical therapist will prescribe a home exercise program to reduce the risk of re-injury and maintain the gains you have achieved at while in our care.
