Born to Run: Jay Klein

Jay Klein was able to compete in the Born to Run 5K recently, but crossing the finish line again wasn’t always a certainty for him. Although he had always been an avid runner and very active, more recently he had been experiencing debilitating pain along with decreased function and it looked like it may relegate him to the sideline instead of the finish line.

Jay had a history of chronic shoulder problems and after his 4th dislocation in 15 years, opted to undergo a labral repair and capsular shift surgery to “tighten” his right shoulder joint. He had previously had the same procedure performed on his left shoulder 15 years earlier.

Prior to this surgery, Jay was very active with running, hiking, and recreational sports and was hopeful to return to what he loved. He came to SportsCare Physical Therapy where he was thoroughly evaluated and was treated for over 100 visits due to the extensive protocol and caution with his recovery his physician put in place. Jay’s goal was to get back to what he loved, and ultimately to perhaps run in the NYC Marathon.

Jay continued his exercises after being discharged from Physical Therapy and continued to ramp up his running; recently he participated and won the Born to Run 5K benefiting the Bruce Eckrote Memorial Fund on Sunday September 11, 2016. The Born to Run 5k is a charity run that raises money for local families in need, supports scholarships at Wayne Valley and Wayne Hills High Schools, contributes funds to cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and the oncology patient care center at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Jay is currently training for and scheduled to run in the New York City Marathon on November 6th of this year. His story is a testament to what can be done with the proper dedication and treatment team. At SportsCare Physical Therapy you will always receive the individualized care, attention to detail, as well as the compassion and dedication necessary to get you back to enjoying life.
