Diastasis Recti: Abdominal Separation After Pregnancy

Written By: Kristen Faigle, PT, DPT, OCS, COMT, SportsCare Waldwick Clinical Director

Diastasis Recti or separation of the rectus abdominis muscle is a common postpartum condition that results from the mechanical stretch applied to the abdomen from the growing baby during pregnancy.

When diastasis recti is present, it is important to perform core strengthening under supervision as some common core exercises can increase the separation.

Here at SportsCare Physical Therapy we will educate you on the proper core exercises to perform to heal diastasis recti, strengthen your core, and return you to your prior functional level.
