Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in NJ, NY & FL is the third leading cause of death in the United States, with over 11 million cases recorded. It is typically caused by smoking and/or inhaling pollutants, such as fumes, chemicals and dust found in various work environments. Genetics also play a role in the development of this disease.
COPD is comprised of several different conditions, including asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. These conditions are classified by having an obstruction of the airway, leading to the dysfunction of the gas exchange in your body, increased mucus production, mucosal thickening, and inflammation of the muscosal lining of the bronchi. Bronchospasm (constriction of the bronchial walls) causes air to get trapped in the lungs. Signs of COPD include increased mucus, shortness of breath, chronic cough, wheezing, difficulty expelling air, decreased oxygen and pulmonary hypertension.
It is not uncommon for a patient to have COPD when being treated at SportsCare. It is important to let your physical therapist know your medical history. We will ensure your exercises are appropriate for you, and monitor your symptoms throughout your treatment session. We have the tools to measure your heart rate, oxygen saturation and blood pressure to make sure you are safe and healthy in our care.
