While there are times when Physical Therapy can prolong or even prevent the need for surgery, there are times where surgery is the best option. Sometimes pain in the groin, hip, shoulder, or knee can be oppressive and stop you from living your life. You may find yourself being less and less able to enjoy the things that used to be your favorite activities. If osteoarthritis is causing this pain and has progressed to the point of being “bone-on-bone” then total joint replacement may be necessary to allow you to regain your life.
After total joint replacement, therapy is crucial for pain management, restoring range of motion, strength, and mobility. You will be amazed at how quickly you are able to get around, often starting therapy less than 24 hours after surgery.
Starting on day one, your SportsCare Physical Therapist will focus on pain management and improving your range of motion to allow you to regain independence in the home and in the community. Once you are feeling more like yourself again, your program will be individually modified to fit your needs. As you work through your recovery, your therapist will continue to customize your exercise program to meet your individual needs and goals. The duration of your treatment will vary based on your goals.
After having your total joint replacement, you can often return to your favorite activities, whether that is working in the garden, playing with your grandchildren, or participating in sports. Once you finish your course of therapy, your therapist can provide you with a comprehensive exercise program to promote strength and wellness as you move on to a new and healthy chapter of your life. We at SportsCare will take you step by step through your recovery and get you back on track to living your life.
